Harley got all his pins in his back removed today!!!!!
They said his back is healed and that his jaw is
starting to calcify so they think probably another
month for the jaw pins!!! I'm so relieved and happy
for him.

Hurst Update

Harley went today for his one month follow up after
having been hit by a car. The Drs. were pleased by
his progress. They took back x-rays and it showed
that his cracked vertebra is beginning to heal and
the opening for his spinal cord looks great. He will
still have to have his back and jaw pins in for
another month but there is a good possibility that
his back pins will come out in a month. He has gained
almost one pound this month and is mostly a happy
loving little guy who just wants to be by my side all
the time. He also really wants to play with other
dogs but he will have to wait a little longer.

McGuire Harley Hurst is one LUCKY
LUCKY boy. His post-surgery
prognosis is optimistically guarded.
Within few hours after surgery, he
was able to actually sit up.

Look at the external stablizers -
one just below his jaw and the
other, the bright pink "handle" on
his back. Doesn't he remind you of
the Borg from Star Trek fame?

The x-ray below shows all the pins
needed to fix his broken jaw.

Little tiny, sweet McGuire Harley
Hurst came to us from a shelter in
the DFW area. The story started
when we received an email from the
shelter saying that they had taken
in a stray hit-by-car but had to
keep him for three days waiting on
his owner to reclaim him. No owner
ever came, so we got him on
Thursday.

The news originally was that his jaw
bone was snapped and hanging by a
strip of flesh. After he was
evaluated by the vet, we found that
his condition was much much worse -
not only does he require complicated
surgery to save his broken jaw, he
also had a fractured vertebra and
the trauma that caused it also
caused it to slip out of alignment by
70%.
