This is what makes it all worth it! Late nights writing the blog, begging all the time, spending untold hours running to shelters, to the vet, to the homes of potential adopters, etc. I wanted to make sure you didn’t think that all we do is TAKE IN dogs, we also adopt them out!! These fluffsters were adopted in August 2007. Yeah!

Houston dog lovers, I am just numb right now. All evening, we’ve been working to figure out where in the world to put dogs that will die if we cannot get them into the program. I know I am always asking more and more and more of everyone – the volunteers, the dogs, YOU and even myself, but we’re just about at the very end of the rope TONIGHT.
There are FOUR dogs at Harris County, three of which are heartworm positive so will not be adopted to the general public, there are FOUR more in the surrounding shelters, and we don’t know how many we’ll be asked to take in and on top of all of that, we’ve just heard that there was a small shih tzu breeder confiscation in Houston, details still to come.
The thing is that WE HAVE NO PLACE TO PUT THEM!!!! Every single boarding spot that we have is FULL – and the fourth of July holiday is coming up. We need EIGHT foster homes – even if it’s just for a MONTH or TWO MONTHS to get us through this horrible summer without loosing any tzus or lhasas – and we need these foster homes TODAY!!
We need to be able to tell the shelters TOMORROW whether or not we can pick up the dogs. PLEASE, PLEASE if you’ve ever thought about fostering, NOW IS THE TIME. Yes, I know we cannot save them all, but darn it, I want to try!
Email SHERRY@pawpawpatch.net if you can foster one or more of our already vetted fluffs.
We have 12 that are ready for a foster home immediately and need to get them out so we can save these that are sitting in Houston shelters.
Here are some of the ones that are ready for fostering ….
Kenya Harris - young
Buster Turner - young

Sophina Ranger – senior
General Tso Davis - young

Chile Harris - young
I know we’ve been hitting you all a lot lately, but it IS summer and it IS the WORST summer in animal rescue in the past ten years. I just hope we can save a few!
Here are the pitiful ones that are waiting for us at the Harris County shelter….

This is a little female with heartworms. There is someone with an adoption hold who is looking for an inexpensive place to get her heartworm treatment.

This is a young male with skin problems and hair loss.

This little cutie also has the heartworm death sentence. No one has a hold on him.

This is a tiny female with really bad skin problems.
See why we need help! I cannot look at these sweeties and just let them go without putting up a huge fight. They are just unfortunate to have been left at the shelter during the horrible month of June 2007!!

You all are very wonderful, we have donations for many of these little dogs that WERE on death row. Now, we need FOUR very special favors – we have the donations, but still need FOREVER homes for the four SENIOR lhasas. They all seem very friendly and not “uppity” at all.
Anyone? As soon as I hear that someone can take one of these babies home (TERESA@shihtzu-rescue.com), I will get them from the shelter. Pictures are below – the four at Galveston – three blonde and one gray.
Please, especially if you’ve recently adopted a younger dog, please consider making a tiny little place at the table for one of these little throwaways.
I’ve been working some horrible hours this week, but will try to get everything, news wise, caught up this weekend!!

How about some good news? Just so you don’t think that ALL we do is take in pitiful dogs. We do adopt some out.
Here is the list of dogs adopted in the past 45 days.
![Seth_Yancey1[1].jpg](http://lonestarshihtzurescue.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/Seth_Yancey1[1].jpg)
Seth Worth - will now be a Yancy and live with Colby and Sweetie
Celina Barns – adopters got their sights on her and forged ahead
Dawson Davis – heading to Phoenix to be a spoiled only child

Bee Gee Burke – will be living on a nice quiet ranch in Magnolia
![Pasha_and_Mollie___getting_acquainted___April_2007_007[1].jpg](http://lonestarshihtzurescue.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/Pasha_and_Mollie___getting_acquainted___April_2007_007[1].jpg)
Laela Harris – boy o boy – will this girl be spoiled. And have a little 1 year old sister, Pasha.

Posted in Breaking News, Dog Food Recall at 12:35 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue
I started posting a few press releases concerning the dog food recall, but quickly found it was an impossible task to keep up. But, there are several websites dedicated to tracking the deaths, lawsuits, any news related to the MENU FOODS recall.
PetConnection
Howl911
Itchmo
Vetcetera
Also, HERE is a link that is keeping up with dog food that is NOT made by Menu Foods. In my personal opinion, these are the only foods I would use until this issue is sorted out.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Menu foods announced yesterday, a recall of dog and cat food manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007 after receiving feedback from US raising concerns about the impact on the renal health of pets consuming the product….
Read the Menu Foods Press Release HERE.
Read the list of dog food brands recalled HERE.
Read the list of cat food brands recalled HERE.
Also, although not mentioned on these lists, HILLS, the makers of Science Diet and the Hills prescription brand dog food is also doing a recall. Read Hills notice HERE.
What concerned me more than this specific incident is to see how many DIFFERENT, well-known brands are manufactured at the same plant and presumably with similar ingredients. Many of these brands are foods we routinely recommend for shih tzu and lhasas – others are brands we wouldn’t allow within ten feet of a tzu or lhasa. Now to find they are all under the same recall begs the question of whether there is, in fact any difference between these brands.

March 14, 2007 – Central Ohio
Humane Society agents on Wednesday were searching for a woman wanted for animal cruelty.
Prosecutors said Maureen McLaughlin admitted killing 650 puppies, dogs, and cats by drowning them in a trash can.
McLaughlin recently told authorities she would fill a trash can with water, put the animals in a crate, and place the crate in the water.

I cannot believe it’s time to get ready for Christmas. We JUST now got past the summer dumping season and now we’ve got to get ready for the holiday dumping season.
Why do so many people find it necessary to dump their dogs during holidays? How unbelievably unfeeling. Sweet little dogs that have many times not known any other humans, coldly dropped off at a shelter to face almost certain euthanasia. Why?
Well, we’re going to start our fundraising right now so that we have the capacity to take in as many shih tzu and lhasa apsos as possible during the upcoming Christmas holiday.
One thing we want you all to focus on is our new and improved online store. Here we are putting many original designs on tons of merchandise, including mousepads, Christmas cards, coffee mugs, ceramic coasters, ornaments, t-shirts, sweat-shirts and many, many other items – all featuring stunning designs with lhasa apsos and shih tzu. Even some other breeds – labrador retrievers, beagles, dachshunds, bichon frise, maltese, pekingese, golden retrievers, rotweiller and more.
Check it out: DOGSDOGSDOGS
And, for those of you that love shih tzu and lhasas, we’ve searched them all out from all artists on the site – some are brilliant paintings of shih tzu and lhasas:

Excellent article in the St Louis Post Dispatch online today. So many small dogs are pampered into being a “decoration.” It’s a shame. Read the entire article at this link.

No, the crocodile hunter wasn’t a dog rescuer, but what a character. He made learning about the crocs and other dangerous species entertaining and interesting. The world will miss Steve.
