Why breed rescues are picky

Posted in Editorials at 7:55 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

Nice article yesterday in the Houston Chronicle about why some breed rescues are very, very picky about their adoptions.

 http://chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/4237387.html

Honestly, it’s not really the people that aren’t approved, it is situation.  Here are three of the primary reasons.

 1.  Electronic fences – might be ok keeping a dog in the yard, but what happens when that roaming 120 pound stray comes walking INTO the yard where your tiny six pound lhasa puppy stays.  Take a look at TEENA’s Story and see what can happen.

2.  Unaltered pets in the household – and no medical reason.  Part of exhibiting responsible pet ownership is to do what is right for all of the dogs in your household – there is no reason pet dogs should be left intact.  And many health reasons they should be altered young.  Do the right thing.

3.  Outside pets – a dog that lives outside has an address, not a home.  Need I say more?  Not where I want little Justine, who we nursed back from the brink of death, to live.

Yes, there are a lot of people that disagree with not allowing a “homeless” dog to go live in one of these situations – well as the Chronicle article says, we are in it for the dogs – period.

Little Grumpy Dogs – here is a great example

Posted in Editorials at 9:21 pm by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

The only reason there are little grumpy dogs is PEOPLE! People make the little grumpy dogs. People should be ashamed. Here is a great example – an email I received today: My wife and I have a 7 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso named Coco. Recently Coco bit my wife severely as my wife tried to make Coco come back in the house by swatting her on the hindquarters with a magazine. A week before that, Coco bit my wife on the foot when she accidentally stepped on Coco at night. We love Coco dearly but believe we needed to remove her from our household. We were planning to have her euthanized but learned of your organization. We would like to enter Coco into your organization for a second chance. She will have all her shots and will be recently checked for heartworms. She is a beautiful tan Lhasa and is very loving and quite protective as many Lhasa’s are. I would be happy to contribute for any costs to allow Coco to have a second chance. Now, what is wrong with this picture? Lady tries to whack the dog with a magazine, the dog tries to protect herself and the people are ready to send the dog off to die! Unbelievably irresponsible pet ownership!
