From Aunt B’s Foster Mom
Saturday Afternoon: Aunt B went to the vet this morning, and while she’s a sick little girl, it’s not as bad as we had imagined. She was diagnosed with coccidia, which is an intestinal parasite as well as an intestinal bacterial infection. It’s something she’s picked up from the soil as she loves to go out and sniff and lick everything in the yard. From now one, she’ll be taking short trips outside and be watched more carefully. The vet felt she wasn’t dehydrated enough to be concerned at this point and sent her home with several medications. She should start to feel better in about 48 hours. Her foster mom will try to get some chicken broth down her if she won’t eat and mix it with a little pumpkin because her intestines are inflamed and she’s had diarrhea. This problem could lead to serious consequences, but we caught it in time and the vet feel she’ll be just fine. Thanks to everyone for helping us take care of her. As of Tuesday night, we’ve raised $135 for her bills. THANKS WYATT EDENFIELD, CAT MARTINDALE and MARTY HOWARD!
Although no longer an ICU condition, we still need to raise the funds for this vet visit as well as her annual exam which is soon coming up. Please donate HERE via paypal or go HERE to send a check(specify Aunt B)!
We can now take credit cards – American Express, Mastercard, Visa and Discover. I’ve uploaded the credit card authorization form. If you want to use a credit card, please click HERE to down load the form. You can then fax it to 281-754-4851. And email me (Teresa@shihtzu-rescue.com) so I know to look for the fax.

Saturday Morning: It’s unbelievable, but we’re faced with another immediate medical challenge. Aunt B, has declined almost overnight and is not taking fluids. Fortunately, her foster mom was able to detect it early this morning in time to get her into one of our vets rather than it waiting until we had to take her to an emergency clinic. Sweet Aunt B has not been eating as well as normal, but her foster mom didn’t think too much of it until she noticed she didn’t eat at all on Friday and then began declining liquids, and as of early Saturday was not urinating or drinking and had become extremely lethargic. We don’t know what is wrong, but we need to get her in for some tests and fluids quickly We estimate the cost to be around $225 at this point unless they detect something more serious needing attention. We’re ordering a chem 6 blood panel to check for liver and kidney values, a CBC to check for anemia and some subQ fluids to help her over this hump. We know how much everyone has been willing to help recently with our dogs in the hospital, but we need just a bit more to help this little girl out. We are hopeful it’s something minor and she’ll be back to normal very soon.

She also was reminded by the vet tech that the estimate they gave us last night DID NOT INCLUDE OUR 20% DISCOUNT. So the number we are shooting for is only $1,226. We always shoot for their upper estimate. If more funds than needed are donated, it is applied to another needy dog.

FUND STATUS: 1:00 PM CST, Thursday, AUGUST 23, 2007

$935

Ok, I just sat down to give you the good news about Chantilly and got an urgent phone call from the foster mom of our Braysia.
This is adorable Braysia.

She had just arrived home from work and found Braysia in severe distress. Braysia has not eaten in 36 hours and started throwing up last night around midnight. She threw up three times and her foster mom planned on taking her to the vet tomorrow if there was no improvement. But, when she got home tonight and saw Braysia in severe abdominal pain, not even interested in drinking water, the foster mom rushed her to the same clinic that Chantilly was at just last night. They have no idea what is wrong with her, but need to do some diagnostics since this is the second time in a few months that she has had these symptoms.
They estimate that for her stay in ICU plus a Super Chem blood workup, and a test for pancreatitis, an urinalysis, abdominal x-rays and IV fluids (she is very, very dehydrated), the bill for tonight could be $1,100-$1,532. This amount includes around $685 of tests that we would do at our vet anyway and they are just slightly more expensive here. There is a total of around $220 for meds and the IV fluids and the rest is the ICU hospitalization.
I don’t even know what to do here. When I was talking with the foster mom, I said “no way.” There is just no way we can ask for more right now. Now, we’ve asked for so much from you all lately but since we are advocates for these little dogs, I have to come with this case too. We MUST be able to treat this gorgeous little lhasa girl!!
So PLEASE HELP!!
Please help us help Braysia. This little girl has been through so much – she has been fighting severe allergies for a year and just recently has WON the battle. That and finally, there is someone interested in adopting her. Please help us help her.

This one is soooo sad. We went to pick up a little shih tzu at the shelter last week (turned out to be a Maltese , whew!), and they asked us if we wanted this matted, broken girl. They thought she had been hit by a car and of course no one would adopt her from the shelter.

Well, we thought she was a mess when we picked her up, but it’s even worse than we thought.

She has not been hit by a car – just has a horrible very old back injury. She can barely walk but thankfully, is not in pain.

Here you can see her crooked back. And how totally wasted away her back end is. Almost no muscle at all in her back legs.

And how her back legs don’t “work right.”

Here, she’s cleaned up and resting.

She LOVES these little beds.

She also has a horrendous heart murmur – grade V – and is on meds for congestive heart failure. We don’t think she has long, but will give her a place to stay as long as she wants to stay around.

Consequently, we aren’t going to ask for a monthly sponsorship for this beauty. Just for help with vet bills as she incurs them.

To date, she has $365 in vet bills and as of today, $325 in donations. Thank you Susan Lewis, Karen Anderson, Odean Cusak, Marty Howard, Tricia Havis, Ginger Guest-Warnick, Donna Wilt, Cat Martindale, Amanda Moulton, Byron Ledger, Michelle Bynum, . If you can donate for her fund, please donate HERE via paypal or go HERE to send a check(specify Easter Lily Harris)!!!

Around 12 years old, Chrissy is another miracle dog. Turned over to a DFW area shelter because she snapped at the kids, Chrissy was found with a sock stuck in her intestines. She passed a small part of a sock then went into cardiac arrest while the vet was examining her. Thankfully, he was able to pull her thruough. This girl is gorgeous. But her age, 61 to you and I, makes potential adopters look the other way fast. So she’s here with us and will remain through her golden years.

Here’s Chrissy ==>My name is Chrissy and guess what, I look like my name would be Chrissy because I have the pretty-girl look. I have one brown eye and one blue eye and beautiful markings on thick, foxy-red-brown hair.

Like most girls, I don’t like to talk about my age. But, let me just brag that I am 9 years old and keep myself in excellent shape. I have a good figure and no health problems. I do have to admit to one thing – I have no bottom teeth in the front. Believe me when I say that you will never notice because my bottom lip is black and my gum is black and my top teeth are very nice. It took my foster mom months to notice that my bottom teeth were gone in the front. She started laughing when she realized this because she had been worried that I would eat the cat.

You see, I have a cat brother at my foster parent’s house. I had not ever been around a cat before. I found out he is reallly fun to torment and I have taught my Lhasa-sister to torment the kitty with me. We backed him into a corner one day behind a potted palm – that was great. Since I met the cat I have been scaring him by baring my teeth so I hope my foster mom doesn’t give away my secret about my bottom teeth or that will ruin my power over him.

So, back on the topic of my and my looks and my figure and my health and me in general. Sometimes when someone picks me up it hurts a little, so I make noises. My foster mom and dad have a competition going to see who can move me on and off the very tall bed without me making any noise. Mom wins hands down. Dad is still trying to figure out how to move me around without me getting growly.

I am also told, although I will not admit it, that I snore. I don’t think that is very ladylike and I highly doubt it is true, but my foster mom and dad say so. On the topic of noises, I have developed an excellent bark in my opinion – it is offputting to strangers that I like to watch out the window, but still elegant I think. I always woof twice in a row, like this… Woof Woof. Then I pause and say, Woof Woof again. In my opinion, that is the best way of talking.

If you would like me to be your companion, you will have to promise to give me toys to play with, let me follow you all around the house and lay wherever you are and pick me up gently. Also, I don’t think I would want a cat around because I’m not sure they are all as nice as the one I have.

We expect that, because of her age, she will not be picked by an adopter. She is welcome to stay with her foster mom. But, she does have monthly expenses that average around $100 a month. While she is in our program, she is looking for five people to subscribe to donate only $20 a month for his. If you are interested in being one of his sponsors while she remains in our program, you can subscribe via paypal HERE or if you would rather send a check, you can do it HERE.

Cinnamon’s problem is that he has a heart murmur which always makes adopters hesitant. He is an adorable all-white little boy who has been through some difficult times and is truly one of our miracle dogs. But, with his health problems, no one seems to be interested in him.

Did you know that cinnamon comes from the bark of a tree? Well, with THIS Cinnamon, the only “bark” you’ll get is a bark of joy when you come home! This beautiful Maltese mix is about 7 years old, petite at only 10#, and loves to love.

This boy has one of the most interesting medical histories – he came to us heartworm positive, very, very thin and with anemia. We treated his heartworms, but he continued to have anemia and was not getting any better. Our great vet, Dr. Moore at Stafford Oaks Veterinary Hospital, did some diagnostic tests and found something the lab had never seen before - microfilaria in the bone marrow. We re-treated him for heartworms and thankfully, Cinnamon totally recovered. All his health problems have been treated and his response to that treatment has been to happily wag his tail. He does require some ongoing medication, but takes it easily in his food. He is a loyal little boy who likes to just sit and look up at you. Your French toast will taste sweeter with this bit of CINNAMON at your side!

This boy is so wonderful, and we just don’t understand why everyone ignores his beautiful little face. We really wish someone would give little Cinnamon a REAL last name, but until that wonderful, compassionate person steps up, he’ll stay with us.

Cinnamon only needs around $100 a month, for his vet visits and meds while he is in our program. He is looking for five people to subscribe to donate only $20 a month for him. If you are interested in being one of him sponsors while he remains in our program, you can subscribe via paypal HERE or if you would rather send a check, you can do it HERE.

Have you ever seen such a gorgeous, classic lhasa apso boy? This little guy is just wonderfu and such a classic sweet face. Ok, the teeth are a bit distracting, but gaze into those deeply expressive eyes and you’ll see nothing else.

We’re not sure why Chaney is in our forever foster program. He’s sweet, not tempermental, easy going and just gorgeous. Unfortunately, he may have been overlooked because he’s older (9) and has cataracts. He promises that the cataracts do not stop him from getting around and he adores people.

We were hoping that someone would come along and give him a home of his own, but if no one is interested, he’s welcome to stay here.

Right now, we’re looking at $100 a month, for his vet visits and meds while he is in our program. He is looking for five people to subscribe to donate only $20 a month for him. If you are interested in being one of his sponsors while he remains in our program, you can subscribe via paypal HERE or if you would rather send a check, you can do it HERE.

Today, Cheney has >b>0>/b> sponsors.

A little on the blind side (requires drops twice a day), a little on the deaf side, a little on the chunky side but the sweetest older little guy you’d ever want to meet. Previous owners of 13 years just didn’t want him anymore – could not even think of a reason to give.

Bubba had been a devoted pet to a family for 13 years. After deciding that they no longer wanted to care for him, they took him to their family vet to have him euthanized. The vet, knowing what a great little dog Bubba was, asked the family to release him to him and in turn he contacted our group to see if we could take him in. Kudo’s to that vet – Bubba is a terrific little guy and a joy to have as a foster.
He’s adapted so well to his new surroundings. He has good potty manners, is crate trained and walks nicely on a leash – not very far, but he does like to get out and go for short walks a few times a day. He does get a bit stressed if he’s in the backyard and loses his bearings so he’ll bark until you rescue him and point him in the right direction – no problem, he’s a sweetie! He doesn’t bother the cat and he’s not bothered by the other dogs like he was in the beginning. Just like everyone else, he has his favorite spots and that’s where he tends to hang out – a favorite rug on the kitchen floor and a cozy pillow by the window.
Bubba is deaf and does have dry eye in both eyes – requires eyedrops twice a day and he’s a perfect gentleman when he’s being tended to.
Ole Bubba, though is a notorious beggar – you can see from his picture that he definitely had never gone hungry. We’re working on the weight issue and he seems to be doing ok – we’re limiting treats and have restructured his diet so slowly but surely we should be starting to see some progress.

Just one more thing about Bubba – he has such a unique personality and I think he’ll steal your heart as soon as you meet him! There’s just something about him that makes a person smile!

A poem for the older ones…
One by one they pass my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his prime he can’t run and play,
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail,
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn’t belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head
Can’t justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond the cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly and want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
I promise to return all the love I can give,
To You, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

While Bubba is in our program, he needs normal veterinary care and meds. He’s looking for five wonderful people, who may not be able to adopt him in person, but who wants to do a “virtual” adoption and support his medical needs. He needs around $100 a month, on average, for shots, meds, etc. His five “virtual adopters” need only subscribe to contribute $20 a month to his fund. That will keep him pretty much ok while he is in our program – which may be the rest of his life. If you are interested in “virtual adoption” of Bubba Turner, and want to contribute by credit card via Paypal, please GO HERE. If you’d rather send Bubba a check, CLICK HERE.

To date, Bubba Turner has 1 virtual adopters. THANKS JEAN! Now he just needs 4 more!!

Microsoft had severe problems with our newsletter this weekend. Microsoft was having some sort of system problems and couldn’t make the newsletter go out to all the members for over 24 hours. And, when they did send it out Sunday morning, it was, unfortunately, dated Friday night. So many, many of you missed the urgent message for these sweeties. Regardless, here is the summary of where these five stand on their funds Sunday night.

1. Reba North – senior shih tzu with cataracts – needed around $500 for initial vetting, currently has $200 thanks to Ann Ervin, Martin Howard, Diana Goldman, Rebecca Morgan, Kay Wyly. So, this cutie only needs another $300. HELP HER HERE.

2. Angel Burke – 12 year old lhasa/schnauzer/something – needed around $500 for initial vetting, currently has $30 thanks to Martin Howard, Patty Dadamo and Diana Goldman. Her fund is really lacking and she really, really needs you. She has rotting teeth and will need a pretty massive tumor removed from her head, so we expect her to be an expensive adventure. HELP HER HERE.

3. Langston Burke – cute, young little tzu boy – has heartworms and needs $350 for treatment. So far, his jar is empty. HELP HIM HERE.

4. Tootie anhd Felicity – both had cherry eye surgery, but Friday, they still needed $380 for their bill. This weekend, they received $25, so still need about $355 to pay their bill off. HELP THEM HERE.

Although we have not had time to add it up, we need to board six or seven dogs during the various spring breaks. They need about two weeks worth of boarding fees which amounts to around $450. So far, we have $250 thanks to Elliott Lander. HELP THEM HERE.

Yes, yet another. I know, we need to STOP taking in old, ancient dogs, but…who else is there to help them.

Our foster mom was at the shelter picking up Langston Burke, when this nasty person came in and unceramoniously dumped his 12+ year old dog – even though he was warned that the shelter was at capacity and owner turn ins would be immediately euthanized. Oh well.

So, the foster mom called me – what could I say.

Angel is now at her house – ok, she’s not a purebred lhasa or tzu, but darn, she’s cute and she needed SOMEONE. One of the biggest problems with these mixed designer breeds, like labradoodles, shih-a-poos, etc. is that there is NO breed rescue for these fluffs. We think Angel is lhasa/schnauzer with a little poo mixed in. Regardless, she’s our responsibility now and she’s safe at her foster home.

If you think you could help with her initial vetting, please DONATE HERE via paypal. We’ll need at least $500 to get started and will let you know if more is necessary.

We’re always coming to you with our URGENT, DESPERATE dogs, but we do take in some that turn out to be simple and quickly adoptable. Here are a few we took in this week…

Otto Harris was a second dog in as many days that we were asked to take in because he had an eye problem. When we got him to the vet, we found that he had horrible mats over his eye, but little else. Very nice, sweet little lhasa apso boy.

Langston Burke is a highly adoptable little guy that had the misfortune to get a cold while at the shelter. Once that happens, the dog has to leave the shelter – either with us or…out the back door. We preferred this way and picked him up. No picture yet.

While we were picking up Langston, a horrible, nasty man came in and dropped off THIS ONE.

We named her Angel Burke. Ok, she was noted as a shih tzu mix – but I’m thinking more lhasa mix or even tibetan terrier. Anyone? Regardless, can you believe – 12 years old, horrible teeth, bad skin – dumped with no regard to the years and years of love given. All in one package. Her foster mom says her teeth are rotting in her head and she has several skin lesions that we’re going to have the vet look at. We may need some help with vetting once the doctor looks at her. Stay tuned.

Tex Ranger was found roaming in a neighborhood and it took them 5 days to catch him because he was so scared.

Handsome little guy, isn’t he? They kept him for 2 weeks with children ranging from 2 – 10 and he did great with them. He wasn’t exactly thrilled with one of their other dogs. He was shaking when I got him, but otherwise very sweet and cooperative. Amanda and I just had to laugh at the expression on his face. Tex is the perfect name for him. He only weighs 13 lbs and is at a good weight for him, he is just very macho. Beautiful little lhasa apso boy.

CeCe Turner – this is a weird one – sweet 5 month old shih tzu puppy. We agreed to take her in when we got an email that her owner had exhausted his money paying for vet bills and she was very sick. He stated that she was bleeding from her neck and back. Ok, I suspected demodex and a very itchy, hairless dog. When we got her and washed off the two places she was bleeding, we found a large laceration on her neck – looks like someone accidentally cut her or something, and another little spot on her back where she was scraped for skin mange. And, she has swollen allergy eyes. Our vet stitched her up and she’s recovering fine.

Above is Charo Worth- originally, we went to the shelter to pick up a male shih tzu with “a severely infected mouth.” When we got there, we found out that another rescue had picked him up. But, the shelter told us that this little girl was out of time THAT DAY and asked if we wanted her. Normally, we don’t get the young, healthy ones from the shelters, but since she was on the way to be euthanized, we got her. What a delight. How cute she is now that the mats are all over. Available in a few weeks. Looks lhasa apso with a tad of poodle mixed in.

Bijou Harris-while we were picking up Mr. Otto with the eye problem, they sprung this one on us too. Again, last day – it was us or else. No pics yet.

Elmo Oak is a total cutie. Not one like we normally get – young, happy, sweet. His problem was just mats and timing – he came into a DFW shelter and no one came to get him. We signed up for last call and he needed us. This is one gorgeous shih tzu.

Chaz Capers was turned into the shelter by his owner because he had allergies. Thats it. Yeasty ears, itchy, swollen eyes and itches. Unfortunately, shelters cannot and do not adopt out dogs with skin problems so his only chance was with us. Here’s his cute face…

That’s all folks!

This little girl came in to our lost and found last week, she has catarcts and skin and ear issues so she will not make it to adoptions here. Is anyone interested in taking her into their program? Please email or call me today as I will be out of the shelter Monday and Tuesday. We can hold for a couple of days if needed.

We ignored it for a few days – just too exhausted to come to you supporters and ask YET AGAIN for help with one of these elderly homeless. This photo haunted me and darn, the ACO called our intake coordinator again today, “this is her last day, are you interested?”

I wanted to scream. So, here I am – we really need to save this little on. She has no one else. BUT, we desperately need a forever home or at least a forever foster home, if no one will adopt her.

And, we desperately need around $500 to do her initial vetting. That’s what it took for Abbi Tate, who is doing well, so please help!!

If you think you could help with her initial vetting, please DONATE HERE via paypal.

Wow, didn’t even get the newsletter out yet, and already a nice donation for her. Thanks, Cat!

So, we only need about $400 now.

Abbi has settled right into her new forever home. She has checked out the yard and the house so she knows where the food and water bowls are. She seems to be a pillow girl. We almost always find her on a pillow when it is nap time. She seems to be healing up real well although she wants to lick at her incision and her paws so we are working on those issues. She and Star get along just fine. No problems there.Photos attachedMike and Joyce

Received this update today from the DFW coordinator:

Abbi got her dental today and she has these amazing white teeth and only had two removed. They were lose due to so much hair being wrapped around them.

She had a couple of fatty tumors removed from her side and an inclusion cyst removed from her tail. She will need stitches out in 10 to 14 days.

She also had her ears flushed and the hair removed.

Her heartworm test was negative YEAH!!!!

She has a skin infection and was started on antibiotics. Hopefully this will take care of her chewing her skin.

She is an amazing little girl and should be just fine. She did great in her surgery and ate a little when she got home and is staying pretty close to the water bowl right now. We will meet Mike and Joyce this weekend and she will go home where she can get all the TLC she can handle. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers and well wishes for this little girl.

YEAH. Go Abbi.
